Hamilton’s Historic Farmer’s Market is back with some changes

Vendors and volunteers found every Saturday morning at Hamilton’s Historic Farmer’s Market at the old Butler County Courthouse are just glad they are able to be there.

It was a question mark for some … would the farmer’s market be able to go on this summer, given the COVID-19 pandemic that has led to many activities being canceled?

The market opened downtown on June 6. The leaders could not let it close, and they are pleased to be bringing fresh produce, beef, crafts and more to the local community.

“It was beautiful weather and busy with customers,” said Market Manager Mary Donnell. “Some vendors could not start yet as not all the crops were ready, and we are still looking for more farmers to participate in our market. Our market to focus on serving this great community and continue to serve old friends and meet new friends,” she said.

The market is following guidelines set in place by The Ohio University Extension and the Centers for Disease Control that are specifically for farmers markets around the country. This includes the suspension of offering samples, practicing social distancing, wearing face coverings and more. Each booth provides hand sanitizer for those who stop by.

Vendors are also encouraging pre-orders, alternative pickup locations and delivery to help keep the number of patrons at the farmer’s market at a safe level.

Donnell says the sellers take great pride in their products, and it shows. Being there is a big step for some of them who are working to expand.

“It has been a great stepping stone for vendors helping them to achieve a brick-and-mortar business.”

Examples of that are The Almond Sisters on High Street and Pet Wants on Main Street, both of which had booths at the market before opening their storefronts.

Hamilton’s Historic Farmer’s Market has been around a very long time.

“Our history runs deep … the market has been serving our community since 1875,” Donnell said.

Some of the long-time vendors returning this season include Gary Dittman, who offers produce, fresh flowers and crafts; Terry Johnson, who sells produce and Nancy Greene, who sells a variety of items including plants, jams and bread.

There are many more long-timers, and there are some new vendors, too: Visitors will be able to purchase eggs from Run Chicken Run & Duck Too Farm, beef from Matthew Nogle and breads and treats from Sweet T’s bakery — to name a few.

More than three dozen vendors are currently part of the Hamilton Historic Farmer’s Market.

Donnell says there are a couple of other folks who especially help make the market run smooth.

“Cynthia Stever has been a wonderful volunteer. And Megan Walker (Hamilton’s Just Desserts) has been right there beside me working hard. She has taken on the role of coordinating food trucks, music, children’s activities (when we can have them), and also is the treasurer,” Donnell said.
