Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park prepares for an exciting Art & Earth Day
Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park offers serene views, rolling hills, and a wide variety of outdoor sculptures. While many Hamilton residents have visited, you may not know the extent to which this park is an asset to the community.
Pyramid Hill offers its outdoor spaces seven days a week, as well as an indoor Ancient Sculpture Museum, a gallery, and a gift shop. It draws tens of thousands of visitors every year to enjoy the art as well as special events.
They have major exhibitions of contemporary outdoor sculpture right now, including nine sculptures from the Mid-South Sculpture Alliance Exhibition that will be in the park until November, and 22 sculptures from Icelandic sculptor Steinunn Thorarinsdottir in a show titled BORDERS, extended through June.
If you haven’t been to the park in a while, there might also have been updates to the permanent collection, and nature always offers something new to explore on Pyramid Hill’s hiking paths and walking areas.
Art & Earth Day is Coming Up
This April 24th, the park grounds will be open for free to the community for Art & Earth Day, a packed day of artist demonstrations, guided hikes, family art activities, exhibitions, and the Pyramid Hill annual meeting.
“There will be free yoga, a free puppet show, and a plein air art competition, where artists bring their own supplies and winners in the over-18 and under-18 categories can win prizes,” explains Gabi Roach, Arts & Programming Manager for Pyramid Hill. “It’s one of our biggest events of the year, along with the Art and Music Festival in September and Journey Borealis around the holidays.”
Celebrating three different holidays, Arbor Day, Earth Day, and International Sculpture Day, there will be many activities in the pavilion and families can also enjoy the wide open spaces of the park, getting to know Pyramid Hill better if they haven’t been in a while.
A Successful Start to Journey Borealis
Journey Borealis is a recent reimagining of the traditional drive-through holiday lights show at Pyramid Hill. This year, with families looking for activities that allowed them to enjoy the spirit of the holiday season while also staying socially distanced, the show did incredibly well – more than 50,000 individuals came to see it.
“We worked with Brave Berlin, who founded Blink Cincinnati, and had geolocated music through a phone application to fit with the lights. The music was specially created for the show by Brave Berlin, the Cincinnati Boys Choir, and the Cincinnati Chamber orchestra,” says Roach.
Collaborations with Pam Kravetz and the Cincinnati Bombshells, the Ross High School Art Club, and the artist-in-residence Sarah Rodriguez all helped to take a previously-popular light show to the next level of artistic beauty.
A generous donor made it possible for residents of the City of Hamilton to attend the show for free on Tuesday nights, and many residents who had never seen the lights at Pyramid Hill were able to attend and were excited to do so.
Become Part of the Park
One of the most affordable ways to experience all the rotating exhibits and events at Pyramid Hill is to purchase a membership. While admission for an adult is $8, a family membership is only $45, which offers a whole year of visits for your whole household.
“With that membership, you get monthly reminders of programs and what is going on at the park, discounts for our big ticketed event, and even discounts on event rentals,” says Roach. “There are real advantages even beyond being able to enjoy art and nature.”
As the good weather arrives this spring and summer, consider taking advantage of all the park has to offer by joining at https://www.pyramidhill.org/membership, and don’t miss all the free fun on Art & Earth Day on the 24th of April.
